dL4 & UniBasic Database Encryption | | Wednesday September 12, 2007 | Dynamic Concepts announces the immediate availability of UniBasic (v9) and dL4 (v7), both of which provide for the encryption of data stored in Contiguous and Indexed Contiguous files. Entire records, or segments of records can be encrypted. Generally, the use of encrypted files requires no changes to existing applications which read and write to files.
Enhancements to the languages are provided to BUILD encrypted files, as well as control and manage encryption keys. A given user accessing an encrypted file will be able to see and modify the encrypted portion of a record if their session includes the appropriate encryption key. Users without the required key can be prohibited from accessing the data, or more commonly see encrypted data as definable text, such as asterisks (*) for credit card or zero's (0) for social security numbers.
At this time, UniBasic v9 and dL4 v7 are available by special request only. Encryption must be specifically enabled on the SSN and the installation must be covered under a Reseller Agreement or Software Assurance. Releases are available for SCO Open Server 5 and 6, Unixware, Linux, Apple OSX (Power PC and Intel) and Windows (dL4 only). If you would like to obtain an upgrade and a copy of the release, please contact your supplier or Dynamic Concepts.
Complete technical details and instructions regarding encryption may be found in the UniBasic and dL4 Release Notes online at: http://www.dynamic.com/support/software/notes.html
dL4 & UniBasic Combined for Licensing, Users and Installation
A new combined installation and licensing procedure is in development for release before the end of 2007. UniBasic and dL4 are being combined, for licensing purposes, into a single product. When installing, both UniBasic and dL4 will be installed on your system and you will be able to use both products up to the number of licensed users. This new facility will allow UniBasic developers to use dL4 for new applications and utilities, such reading or writing to MySQL, MS/SQL, developing socket and network applications and other uses where the enhancements in dL4 simplify such development.
Further enhancements to combine the products will continue in future revisions, such as the ability to SIGNAL between dL4 and UniBasic and to SWAP from one to the other.
Once the initial combination is complete, UniBasic v9 and dL4 v7 will become the standard deliveries. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dynamic.
