April 22, 1996: Passport 3.5.1

New Version of Passport Security Available

DCI has announced the immediate availability of Passport licensing software, Version 3.5.1, specifically for SCO Open Server 5 and SCO Unix. The DCI SCO Unix version (Platform 99) on Open Server has been universally successful as long as a Passport device was included in the installation.

Filesystem Problem Arises

DCI staff discovered that existing SCO Unix software licensing ran into a problem when used with Open Server. Specifically, the licensing made assumptions about the behavior of SCO Unix filesystems which are no longer true for Open Server. For example, the new Open Server filesystems sometimes rebuilt and relocated existing files automatically. On SCO, DCI uses Software Licensing Method #1 (as described in Passport Software User's Guide), which fails whenever licensing files are relocated.

DCI Takes Up the Challenge

Facing this problem, DCI had to create a new method for software licensing on SCO-based systems ? a method that would be compatible with existing installations and meet the following requirements: (1) DCI must be able to maintain a single platform for both SCO Unix and Open Server; and (2) Customers must be able to upgrade to Open Server without purchasing a new DCI product license. The resulting new method is called Method 11. The new method recognizes existing Method 1 licenses. Installation of the new Passport software will NOT invalidate an existing license. The new Passport software will always report Method 11 in your log file, even when it recognizes an older Method 1 License. You can determine which license is in effect by analyzing the size of the license file: Method 1 license files are 8192 bytes, and Method 11 only 4096 bytes.

What You Need To Do

If you have previously used software licensing to install DCI products on the SCO Open Server, OR if you are upgrading an SCO Unix system to Open Server and plan to use software licensing, you must:

(1) Delete /etc/DCI/license
(2) Kill any running Passport daemon
(3) Install Passport 3.5.1 or later for Platform 99
(4) Obtain a replacement SSN from DCI

You may download the latest version of this software using UUCP, or ftp to ftp.unibasic.com OR you may order a diskette for $5 plus shipping.

For All New Installations

All new SCO Unix or Open Server installations should begin using Version 3.5.1 immediately.
