July 1999: dL4Term Beta Release

In our April 1999 Technical News Brief, we announced an upcoming beta release of our new dL4 Terminal Emulator, dL4Term. Designed to allow dL4 applications running on Unix systems to use the same GUI features as dL4 version 4 for Windows, dL4Term also supports UniBasic and other Unix applications. In fact, even character-based UniBasic and dL4 installations may install dL4Term as a low-cost, replacement terminal emulator.

What is dL4Term ?

dL4Term is a Telnet client which is installed on a TCP/IP configured Windows 95/98/NT system. Unlike other Telnet clients, dL4Term does not emulate a specific character oriented terminal, such as a Wyse60 or VT100. Instead, it offers its own set of character-based and GUI (graphical user interface) features. The feature set that is understood is the set of UniBasic/dL4 mnemonics, including colors, fonts, protection and dL4 version 4 GUI mnemonics.

dL4Term operates on the same principle as other emulators, in that it recognizes specific character sequences to invoke its features. It differs in the sense that it cannot be instructed to recognize, and thereby emulate, the hard-coded character sequences of specific terminals. When connected to a properly configured Unix host, for example, dL4Term supports the Unix shell, vi, IQ, UniBasic and dL4. In essence, dL4Term is a GUI (graphical user interface) oriented terminal model with multiple windows and graphic controls such as buttons and list boxes. It also supports displaying multiple fonts or graphics in any of the windows belonging to the GUI "terminal".

Customers may use dL4Term to produce the same Windows style user interface when running their applications on either dL4 for Windows or dL4 for Unix. GUI features can also be used outside of dL4. All of the GUI functionsm are controlled by character sequences thus allowing any Unix application to produce and control a Windows-like user interface. For character oriented Unix applications such as "vi", the GUI terminal model includes all necessary character terminal functions such as cursor positioning, line insertion/deletion, and protected characters.
