Disaster Recovery, Backup and Redundancy Solutions
DISASTER RECOVERY, ENCRYPTION, SSH & BACKUP FOR UNIBASIC & DL4
2006 Development Roadmap
Dynamic Concepts is committed to enhancing the security, reliability and redundancy of your business applications and data. With these goals in mind, we are deploying new products and services:
Dedicated DTR and Dell backup servers for disaster recovery
Backup storage space for your important applications and data
Shared servers for backup e-mail, web and uniBasic/dL4 application services
Transaction logging of UniBasic/dL4 database changes for security and redundancy
Secure SSH communications for dL4Term
File and field level data encryption for UniBasic and dL4 applications
Internet based licensing, including 24/7/365 replacements and upgrades
DISASTER RECOVERY
It is imperative that all companies, large and small, implement a comprehensive disaster recovery plan for their business. It is no longer prudent to plan solely for events which affect only your immediate facility. Your plans must include the timely resumption of those IT operations critical to your day to day business.
Dynamic Concepts offers a number of services so you may resume operations quickly, should a disaster strike. Dynamic will work with you to develop a specific plan to meet your objectives and fit your budget. If you are a developer, we can assist you in designing backup and redundancy services for your customers.
DEDICATED SERVERS
A Dedicated, Managed Server provides an exclusive, ready-to-use server, configured to allow you to run your business remotely, should the need arise. Dynamic takes care of everything, including procurement of the equipment, configuration, security patches and monitoring. Prices start at $249/month and include daily backup and offsite rotation to a secure facility. Options include a managed Firewall, VPN to your facility, backup e-mail, web server, applications, uniBasic/dL4 and other custom services. Your existing system(s) are configured to 'sync' changes to your dedicated server, on a regular basis.
BACKUP STORAGE SPACE
Dynamic is installing a new Network Storage Array, with 7TB of additional on-line disk space, for customers to maintain offsite backups. Software agents, installed on your server(s), automatically push data to our backup server(s). Backup pricing starts at $50/month, including 2GB of storage and 20GB transfer per month.
HOSTED BACKUP SERVICES
Dynamic has deployed new Xeon Blade Servers, offering both operational and standby services. Those services include uniBasic, dL4, dynamicXport, ProStores ecommerce, web sites and e-mail. Standby services are designed to take over your primary service or application following a disaster. Shared servers provides smaller organizations with the redundancy services they need, without the additional costs associated with a dedicated server.
UNIBASIC AND DL4 TRANSACTION LOGGING
Upcoming releases of UniBasic and dL4, scheduled for mid-2006, will include a new file-system journaling feature. This feature allows UniBasic and dL4 to maintain ongoing transaction logs of all changes to your databases. Instead of copying entire files, when just a small number of records have changed, the log files can be pushed to a backup server and the transactions applied. This new feature provides the capability of 'near-real-time' data replication on a redundant server. Most experts suggest that your backup server be geographically redundant, to protect against disasters to the main facility or your immediate area. These new features are especially important for large systems, where it may be impractical to copy the modified set of data files on a nightly basis.
SECURE SSH FOR DL4TERM
As you are probably aware, the Telnet protocol is anything but secure. Logins, passwords and data transmissions are all sent in the clear (unprotected). Telnet over a public network to your secure data is never a good idea, however, even a compromised internal system can intercept and record data that needs to remain secure. If you must connect remotely, it is imperative that your firewall only allows Telnet traffic from trusted sources and you should refrain from transmitting private and secure data in the clear.
SSH (Secure Shell) is an encrypted transmission protocol to facilitate secure communications over a network. All transmissions are encrypted and trusted relationships between users/computers can be established using the Public/Private key encryption system. The upcoming release of dL4Term in April supports both ssh and telnet communications.
DATA ENCRYPTION FOR UNIBASIC/DL4
User CALLs are being added to UniBasic and dL4 to enable application encryption of secure and private information. The CALLs provide application control of the encryption and decryption of data. To facilitate broader use, as well as allow users to come into compliance with regards to the storage of personal and secure information, file-level locking will be available without modifying your application. For example, you could encrypt the entire customer or patient file with no changes to the existing application.
INTERNET UNIBASIC/DL4 LICENSING 24/7/365
Dynamic will shortly discontinue the manufacture and delivery of its serial passport licensing devices. With the evolution of systems and software, their usefulness has all but been eliminated. Originally designed for early Xenix and Unix systems, the device returns a specific license number for a given installation. On early systems, there were no sources of consistent information on which to base a license. Software based licenses could deactivate if certain files were restored, disk drives changed, etc.
Newer systems have built-in information on which consistent licensing can be based. IBM systems have hardware serial numbers and Intel systems come with on-board network cards. Dynamic will deploy a 24/7/365 SSN License Server as a virtual Passport for those systems which do not supply consistent information. Communicating with the SSN server occasionally, the system will be able to detect changes in the license parameters and automatically install a replacement SSN without human intervention.
SECURE STORAGE FACILITY
Dynamic's Data Center is SAS 70 compliant, with respect to security, redundancy and the handling of sensitive customer data. Backup copies are rotated off-site twice weekly, to the secure storage facility of Iron Mountain. All backup data within our data center is transmitted across a separate private network and data backups are transported in locked boxes to and from our location and Iron Mountain. For added security, backup data transmitted over the Internet occurs within an encrypted ssh or sftp session.
