UB/dL4 Disaster Recovery
Dynamic Concepts offers several affordable Disaster Recovery plans for UniBasic and dL4 installations. If you do not have a complete failover plan in place, let our team assist you. Our services include:
- Off-site backup storage provides secure storage of your important data and applications
- Dedicated servers hosted by Dynamic with daily synchronization for quick failover
- UniBasic/dL4 licenses for servers you own or operate for Disaster Recovery
Daily off-site backup is the minimum service you should have in case a disaster strikes and you are unable to utilize your regular daily backup media. Nightly, a copy of your important data is encrypted, compressed and uploaded to our backup server. You are assigned an individual account and directory structure on our server on which you can use any method of upload that is convenient for you. Many commercial backup programs, such as BackupEDGE, LoneTar, Acronis and Veritas have built-in features to encrypt, compress, upload and manage the offsite data. You may also use standard tools, such as rsync, sftp or tar.
A dedicated server provides a higher degree of disaster recovery, since it is a daily 'clone' of your system. Should a failover event occur, your server is literally ready to take over your operations. A written failover plan is established between your organization and Dynamic. Typically the plan includes opening up the IP's from which users may connect, assigning the appropriate resources to your server to manage the anticipated load, enabling dormant automatic server tasks, changing web portals and establishing remote printers.
For organizations that have their own disaster recovery or backup server, Dynamic will provide licenses for those servers at no upfront cost, charging only the annual subscription for that system.
Dynamic's Dedicated Server Platform
Dynamic has deployed a sophisticated architecture that allows customers to "share" the costs of maintaining off-site disaster recovery servers. Instead of acquiring a complete server, including maintenance, software, etc., capable of handling your user load (and then paying for it to sit idle), Dynamic provides each customer a secure, private, dedicated virtual server with nominal CPU and memory resources assigned to it on a normal basis. The server is up 24/7/365 and has the necessary resources to support secure daily synchronization from your primary server, as well as multi-user testing at all times.
Upon notification, your server is assigned additional CPU and memory resources, as required, to fully support your user and database loads. These assignments are based upon the number of users licensed on your system and will be similar in configuration to your primary server. At Dynamic, each virtual server is assigned to a physical server within a cluster of Quad-Core Blade servers, connected via fiber channel to large RAID/5 SAN storage devices. Within the cluster, the amount of CPU and memory resources assigned to a specific server can be changed almost instantaneously. This allows us to upgrade your server to support user loads quickly, either for routine large-scale testing or an actual disaster.
Your dedicated virtual server at Dynamic is totally isolated and unaware of other servers on the same physical hardware or network and has its own operating system, UniBasic, dL4, SSN / OSN, memory, IP address, disk space, file systems and passwords.
Pricing
Free off-site storage for all your active UniBasic/dL4 applications and data is included with a Premium annual Software Assurance subscription. Typically, you should expect availability of 1-2 GB of backup space per-user licensed on your UniBasic/dL4 system. Since most systems do not require this amount of storage, you may use the additional space for multiple backups or storage for other data.
Backup is available for customers not covered by Software Assurance Premium at $2/GB/mo.
A dedicated server, including 500MB of disk space per user, RedHat Linux, UniBasic, dL4, IQ, ODBC, bandwidth and backup of your data to an off site storage location is priced monthly at $50 plus 2% of the retail price of the UniBasic/dL4 license running on your primary server (a 4-user system costs less than $80/month). Initial fees include engineering services to prepare your dedicated server and develop custom synchronization scripts and your failover plan. Software Assurance is required on your primary server and Premium subscribers are entitled to a 20% discount on their server and additional storage. Additional disk space is priced at $2/GB/mo.
When deploying your own backup or disaster recovery server, Dynamic will provide Software Assurance subscribers with a license for an identical or 50% smaller configuration of UniBasic/dL4. There is no upfront cost for this license, however the appropriate annual subscription fee will apply.
